Is it permissible to eat after the Shema on the bed?

AA

Question

Hello esteemed Rabbi, I have several questions and would appreciate your responses:

1. After the Shema said on the bed (the blessing of the one who brings sleep without the divine name and kingship), is it permissible to eat?

2. If one recites only the Shema on the bed without the blessing, can one eat afterwards? Thank you very much in advance.

Answer

Dear Sir,

Initially, it is not advisable to eat after reciting the Shema on the bed - even if one does not say the blessing of the one who brings sleep with the divine name and kingship, or does not recite it at all - because the Shema should be associated with sleep. Nevertheless, anyone who is eager to eat or drink is permitted to do so. However, they should return and recite the section of Shema again.

With blessings,

Hillel Meirs
