Halachot and Customs
When Are Sephardim Prohibited from Washing Clothes During the Nine Days?
Question
Hello esteemed Rabbi, I wanted to ask about the specific customs for those of Mizrachi descent regarding eating chicken and the prohibition of washing during the Nine Days. What is prohibited and what should be avoided? May you merit many mitzvot!
Answer
Greetings,
1. According to the custom of Sephardim, it is forbidden to eat meat starting from Rosh Chodesh Av. However, the custom of Sephardim in Jerusalem and the Land of Israel permits eating meat on the day of Rosh Chodesh itself (Chazon Ovadia, Four Fasts, p. 327).
2. The custom of Sephardim is to refrain from washing clothes starting from the week that includes Tisha B'Av (Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 551:3).
