Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi will make his first visit to Washington since taking office, meeting with members of Congress and the Senate. Following Israel’s recognition, he hopes to advance U.S. recognition and possibly meet with President Donald Trump.

Energy and Infrastructure Minister Eli Cohen and Somaliland President Abdirahman Abdullahi agreed to strengthen and deepen cooperation between the two countries. The two signed an agreement to advance innovative water purification and desalination technologies. The Defense Ministry is also promoting a cooperation agreement.

The government of Somaliland announced that it will open its embassy in Jerusalem. The embassy is expected to open next month at an event attended by Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi. It will be the eighth foreign embassy to begin operating in Jerusalem.

In a historic ceremony at the President’s Residence, Somaliland’s first ambassador to Israel formally presented his credentials. President Isaac Herzog also welcomed the new ambassadors of four other countries.
