IllustrationIf your towels always end up dry and rough, you might want to check out the tips from laundry expert Morgan Lallonde. It's a common issue: towels that go through numerous washes lose their softness and become increasingly stiff. Morgan, a laundry expert at Whirlpool, has revealed on the web five tips to ensure your towels stay soft over time, long after they've left the store:
Skip the Fabric Softener
Contrary to common belief, Morgan says that fabric softener can leave residue on towels and reduce their absorbency. Instead, she recommends using half a cup of distilled white vinegar in the softener compartment of the washing machine. Be sure to use white vinegar, not regular vinegar. The vinegar helps soften the fibers and neutralize any odors.
Wash on Medium to High Heat
When washing towels, choose a normal or towel-specific cycle, using medium to high heat. Washing in cold water may leave soap residues that stiffen the towels.
Use Detergent Sparingly
Don't overuse detergent or gel. Excessive use can lead to soap build-up that hardens the towels. Stick to the recommended amount indicated on the detergent packaging and use a measuring cup.
Dry Correctly
If you dry your towels in a dryer, choose the correct setting for drying towels or use low to medium heat. Drying on high heat for too long can overdry and damage their soft texture.
Store Properly
After laundering and drying your towels, store them in a cool, dry place at home. This helps retain their softness and fresh scent for an extended period.
