According to Dr. Brandon Crawford, a neurologist specializing in brain health, there are five spices you should make sure to include. He shared with SheFinds what they are and why they are so beneficial.
Black Pepper
Black pepper contains piperine—a compound that supports memory and cognitive function. Piperine also enhances nutrient absorption. According to Dr. Crawford, “it can increase the absorption of curcumin by up to 2,000%.” This is likely why piperine is commonly included in curcumin supplements sold in pharmacies.
Turmeric
As previously mentioned, turmeric contains curcumin. Dr. Crawford noted that “curcumin boosts brain hormone levels.” In addition, turmeric has been shown to ease digestive disorders, reduce the risk of heart disease, and even help combat depression.
Ginger
Ginger has been valued for its medicinal properties—particularly in Chinese medicine—for thousands of years. It possesses strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. “Ginger can help enhance cognitive function by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress,” Dr. Crawford wrote. “It also helps balance neurotransmitters, which is crucial for focus and cognitive agility.”
Nutmeg
Nutmeg contains compounds that support memory and help prevent degeneration of neural pathways. “Nutmeg also has mood-enhancing effects, contributing to a more focused and positive mental state,” he explained. It is also rich in antioxidants.
Cinnamon
A daily serving of cinnamon may help prevent diabetes. According to Dr. Crawford, cinnamon supports stable blood sugar levels, which in turn affect brain function throughout the day.
