“When I grow up,” he said, “I want to be wealthy.”
Rabbi Shlomo Zalman smiled and replied with an unexpected suggestion.
“I have a special idea that will help you achieve your goal,” he told the young man. “Right now the yeshiva is beginning to study the chapters ‘HaZahav’ and ‘Eizehu Neshekh’ in tractate Bava Metzia. These chapters deal with subjects that every businessman must understand in order to succeed.”
He continued, “The chapter ‘HaZahav’ discusses currency exchange rates and the laws of overcharging in business transactions. The chapter ‘Eizehu Neshekh’ explains the laws of interest.”
Rabbi Shlomo Zalman then added with confidence, “I promise you that if you study these chapters carefully, with dedication and effort, and truly understand them, you will become wealthy.”
The Student Who Took the Advice Seriously
According to the Shaarei Ha’Ir bulletin, the student took the rosh yeshiva’s advice to heart.
He invested great effort in mastering those chapters of Gemara. Through that learning he gained not only knowledge but also spiritual strength, discipline, and motivation to continue learning seriously until his marriage.
Years later, he entered the business world and achieved remarkable success. Over time he became extremely wealthy and owned luxurious hotels in Switzerland.
Despite his success, he remained closely connected to the Torah world and merited hosting many of the great rabbinic leaders of Israel in his hotels.
The young man had followed Rabbi Shlomo Zalman’s advice, and discovered that the wisdom of the Gemara is not only spiritual guidance, but also a foundation for integrity and success in life.
