You may have heard it said:

Chocolate comes from the cacao bean.
Cacao beans grow on trees.
Trees are plants.
So technically… when I eat chocolate, I’m eating salad.

Well, not quite.

Chocolate is definitely not a salad — but it does contain some excellent, health-supporting components. The problem lies in all the unnecessary additives.

How to Choose Quality Chocolate

Read the ingredient list. Think of the ingredients like slices of a cake:

  • The first ingredient is the largest portion

  • The second is the next largest, and so on

If sugar is listed first, it means the chocolate is mostly sugar. Look for high-quality chocolate will list cocoa mass or cocoa butter as the first ingredient.

What’s So Healthy About Cacao?

Chocolate contains important minerals such as magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, and selenium.

It’s also rich in powerful antioxidants like polyphenols, flavonoids, and catechins, which help protect the body and support overall health.

Some studies suggest chocolate can even improve focus and cognitive function, thanks to compounds like theobromine and small amounts of anandamide.

No wonder grandmothers recommend a small piece of chocolate before a test!

A Surprising Benefit (and a Warning)

Theobromine may also help soothe a persistent cough. Sometimes, a warm natural cocoa drink with a bit of honey can do the trick.

However, while it is beneficial for humans, it is toxic to animals such as dogs, horses, and parrots. Even relatively small amounts can be dangerous and should therefore never be given to pets.

Beyond all its benefits, chocolate is simply enjoyable. It’s delicious, comforting, and sweet.

You can buy high-quality chocolate, or turn it into a fun afternoon activity and make your own at home.
