Pesach Cleaning Without Harming Your Health: What to Know

Simple, practical tips to help you clean safely and avoid the risks of harsh chemical cleaners this Pesach.

AA

As Pesach approaches, many of us feel the pressure to clean thoroughly and get every corner of the home sparkling. But alongside that desire, there is something important we cannot ignore.

Our health.

Every year, when I see the amount of strong chemical cleaners being used, I cannot help but think of an earlier generation, and the price they paid without even realizing it.

A Memory That Still Stays With Me

I often think of my grandmother, Hasiba, of blessed memory.

Before Pesach, she would take all the kitchenware outside and scrub it with harsh cleaning substances. She bent over for hours, breathing in strong fumes, her eyes tearing, her hands burning.

Gloves were not even an option in her mind.

She did what she believed was right, without knowing the impact it could have on her health.

That memory stays with me, and it reminds me that while the desire to clean is understandable, it should never come at the expense of our well being.

Cleaning With Awareness

Not everyone is ready to switch to gentler or natural cleaning products, and that is okay.

But if you are using strong chemical cleaners, it is essential to use them properly.

Cleaning should not leave you with headaches, dizziness, burning eyes, or difficulty breathing. A clean home should not come at that cost.

Here is how to clean your oven safely and effectively.

Step 1: Open the Windows

Before you begin, make sure the oven is completely turned off and cool.

Remove the trays and racks, and open all the windows in your home. Fresh air is essential, even if the weather is not ideal.

Step 2: Apply the Cleaner

Spray the oven cleaner evenly on the walls and door.

Avoid spraying heating elements or electrical areas. Do not mix different cleaning products, as this can create harmful reactions.

Step 3: Let It Work

Close the oven and allow the cleaner to sit for 20 to 40 minutes, depending on the level of buildup and the instructions on the product.

This step allows the cleaner to break down the dirt without excessive scrubbing.

Step 4: Protect Yourself While Wiping

Before you begin wiping, put on gloves.

This is not a luxury. It is a basic step to protect your skin.

Use a damp cloth to gently remove the cleaner and the loosened residue.

Step 5: Rinse Thoroughly

Wipe everything again with a clean, damp cloth to remove any remaining product.

Keep the windows open, and avoid standing too close for too long while the oven is still airing out.

Step 6: Heat the Oven

Once everything is clean and dry, turn the oven on to its highest setting for about an hour.

This helps burn off any remaining residue and ensures the oven is ready for use.

A Healthier Way Forward

Pesach cleaning is important, but it should not come at the cost of your health.

With a little awareness and care, you can achieve both.

A clean home.
And a healthy you.
