Strike in southern Lebanon (Photo: Eyal Margolin, Flash90)The IDF struck today (Shabbat) in southern Lebanon and eliminated a terrorist cell that was operating close to IDF forces, in the area of the forward defensive line that IDF troops deployed to prevent a direct threat to northern communities. Yesterday, six IDF soldiers were wounded by an explosive device that was detonated against a force in southern Lebanon. Two are in serious condition and the others were lightly wounded. The soldiers were evacuated to hospitals in Israel and their families were notified.
The terrorists eliminated today were identified by the 401st Brigade combat team as they approached IDF forces in a way that constituted an immediate threat. To remove the threat, the Air Force struck and killed the assailants.
In addition, the IDF struck, south of the forward defensive line, an underground shaft and Hezbollah operatives as they were seen entering the shaft. According to the IDF Spokesperson, a hit was observed. The IDF stated that "The IDF operates in accordance with the directives of the political echelon. Accordingly, the IDF is permitted to take the measures required for self-defense against threats, while safeguarding the security of Israel's civilians and the forces deployed in the field".
"Actions for self-defense and the removal of threats are not limited by the ceasefire. The IDF will not allow risk to Israel's civilians and its fighters and will take all necessary actions to ensure their security. The IDF will continue operating to clear the area under its control to remove any threat to Israel's civilians and its forces".
Before the ceasefire: IDF seized a strategic ridge
The IDF Spokesperson cleared for publication that IDF forces from a special unit began, prior to the ceasefire taking effect, Operation "Eagle". As part of the operation, the forces landed in the heart of the Christophani Ridge in southern Lebanon and established their activity in the area.
The ridge is located about 12 kilometers north of the Israeli Hermon, in the area that connects the Syrian Hermon to Lebanon. Special forces landed on the ridge and established a presence there, bringing the IDF to the northernmost point in southern Lebanon. Control of the ridge enables observation of key routes in the area, including the Beirut–Damascus highway, and serves as an important command position on the slopes of the Lebanese Hermon.
