U.S. federal agents arrested (Sunday) an American citizen of Iranian descent at the airport in Los Angeles. The arrest took place moments before she departed for Turkey. The detainee, a California businesswoman, is suspected of brokering the sale of thousands of weapons, mainly bombs, millions of rifle rounds, and UAVs—from Iran to Sudan.

Los Angeles-based KTLA5 reported that the woman, Shamim Mafi, 44, will be brought tomorrow for an extension of her detention by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Central District of California. She will be charged with violating Section 1705 of U.S. law, for brokering the sale of drones, bombs, bomb fuses, and millions of rounds of ammunition manufactured by Iran and sold to Sudan.

If convicted, she faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. According to the reports, Mafi is an Iranian citizen who became a lawful permanent resident of the United States in 2016.
