A violent and deeply troubling incident that took place this week in Santa Monica, California, is drawing attention across the United States after footage from the scene spread on social media and raised suspicions of an antisemitic attack. According to local police, the suspect was arrested and is now facing charges of assault and criminal threats, while investigators continue to examine whether the case also constitutes a hate crime.

According to reports, the incident happened around 5:20 p.m. in a central area of the city. Santa Monica police said that "preliminary information indicates that the suspect stopped in traffic and began yelling at two people who were crossing the street." In footage published on social media, the suspect can be seen driving slowly in his car, waving a baseball bat and shouting at the couple.

Later, according to police, the suspect got out of the car and began chasing the two while yelling "genocide" and "murderers." Authorities believe the couple may have been targeted because they are Jewish. After the initial confrontation, the suspect returned to his vehicle, but a short time later he came back again — this time with his dog.

According to the police statement, the dog bit one of the victims on the thigh. The suspect then left the scene with the dog and fled the area. The injured victim was treated at the scene, and his condition was described as minor.

Santa Monica police emphasized that investigators are still examining the circumstances of the case and the motive for the attack. According to police, the suspect also shouted at other people who were in the area, and therefore "at this stage they cannot say with certainty whether the incident qualifies as a hate crime." Police also said investigators are collecting testimony and reviewing body-camera footage and other video from the scene in an effort to determine whether the attack was motivated by antisemitism.

One of the videos documenting the incident was published by Benjamin Bassir, a Jewish American attorney. According to him, this was an "antisemitic attack carried out by a pro-Palestinian individual." Bassir added: "This is the reality many Jews are facing in America today. History has already shown us where silence and indifference can lead. This proves exactly why we need Israel."
