Hummus is one of Israel's most beloved foods. It pairs well with almost any meal and is surprisingly easy to make at home. The simple and delicious recipe below may convince you to stop buying store bought hummus and start making your own. No special ingredients or prior experience are needed.

Homemade Hummus Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dried chickpeas (or 2 cups canned chickpeas)

  • ½ teaspoon baking soda (if soaking and cooking dried chickpeas)

  • ½ cup high quality tahini

  • Juice of ½ lemon (or to taste)

  • 1–2 garlic cloves, crushed

  • ½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)

  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin

  • About ⅔ cup cold water (or chickpea cooking liquid), as needed

Instructions

1. Prepare the Chickpeas

If using dried chickpeas, soak them overnight in plenty of water with the baking soda.

The next day, rinse them well and cook for about 1½ hours, or until they are very soft.

2. Drain

Drain the chickpeas and reserve some of the cooking liquid if desired.

3. Blend

Place the chickpeas in a food processor along with:

  • Garlic

  • Lemon juice

  • Tahini

  • Cumin

  • Salt

Blend until smooth.

4. Add Liquid

Gradually add cold water (or the reserved cooking liquid) while blending until the hummus reaches a smooth, creamy consistency.

5. Adjust Seasoning

Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed, adding more lemon juice, salt, or cumin according to your preference.

Serving Suggestions

Transfer the hummus to a serving plate and drizzle with olive oil.

For extra flavor and presentation, sprinkle with:

  • Paprika

  • Ground cumin

  • Nigella seeds

  • Za'atar

You can also top it with:

  • Whole chickpeas

  • Hard boiled eggs

  • Sautéed mushrooms

  • Fried onions

  • Cooked ground beef

  • Or any of your favorite toppings

Serve with fresh pita, vegetables, or warm bread, and enjoy!
