Inset: the Chafetz ChaimMany people had the privilege of seeing the Chafetz Chaim, hearing his words, or spending time in his presence. Yet those who truly knew his greatness understood that merely being near him did not automatically make a person his student.
Rabbi Shlomo Epstein zt"l, who learned in the Radin Yeshiva under the Chafetz Chaim, once reacted strongly when someone referred to him as one of the Chafetz Chaim's students.
"I heard that you had the privilege of being among the students of the Chafetz Chaim..."
Before the speaker could finish the sentence, Rabbi Shlomo interrupted him.
"Oy!" he exclaimed. "How can anyone say such a thing about me? A student of the Chafetz Chaim? It is true that I spent some time in his presence, but to call myself his student? Do not say such a thing!"
Despite his humility, Rabbi Shlomo once agreed, at the request of Rabbi Elazar Turkel, to share a remarkable story that left a lifelong impression on him.
An Unexpected Invitation
"It was the night after Yom Kippur during the final year of the Chafetz Chaim's life, or perhaps the year before," Rabbi Shlomo recalled.
"In those days, when the yeshiva term ended and students prepared to travel home, the yeshiva administration would help cover part of their travel expenses.
"On the 11th of Tishrei, the day after Yom Kippur, I went with another student to collect the travel stipend from the yeshiva office. That young man was an outstanding Torah scholar and prodigy who was later murdered in the Holocaust, Hashem avenge his blood.
"As we passed the home of the Chafetz Chaim, an avrech standing outside approached us and asked whether we could help complete a minyan for an early Mincha prayer. The Chafetz Chaim was too weak to go to the study hall, so the prayer would take place in his home.
"Naturally, we immediately agreed. Who would not want the privilege of praying in the presence of the teacher of Klal Yisrael?"
A Scene He Never Forgot
When they entered the modest home, they witnessed an unforgettable sight.
Rabbi Elchanan Wasserman zt"l, Hashem avenge his blood, was sitting opposite the Chafetz Chaim. His face reflected profound awe and concentration as he listened carefully to every word spoken by his revered teacher.
Rabbi Elchanan traditionally spent the period from Rosh Chodesh Elul through Yom Kippur in the Chafetz Chaim's presence. Now, shortly before returning home, he sat absorbing his teacher's final words.
"The seriousness on Rabbi Elchanan's face convinced us that the Chafetz Chaim must be revealing lofty secrets of Torah," Rabbi Shlomo recalled.
"At first, we were hesitant to approach. But slowly we moved closer until we could hear what was being said."
What they heard surprised them.
The Fundamentals of Faith
Rather than discussing hidden mystical teachings or complex Torah concepts, the Chafetz Chaim was speaking about the most basic foundations of Jewish faith.
Yet the way he spoke transformed those simple truths into something unforgettable.
"With extraordinary clarity," Rabbi Shlomo recounted, "the Chafetz Chaim described what awaits every person when his time in this world comes to an end.
"He spoke about the tremendous opportunities we are given in this world to acquire eternal spiritual treasures, and how often people exchange them for fleeting pleasures and temporary distractions.
"He described how every action, every thought, every intention, and every feeling is known before Hashem. Nothing can be concealed. Nothing can be hidden.
"He spoke about the Heavenly accounting each person will face and the awesome reality of Divine judgment."
As Rabbi Elchanan listened, he trembled.
The great Torah giant sat before his teacher like a student hearing these truths for the first time.
A Changed Perspective
After Mincha, Rabbi Shlomo and his friend left the Chafetz Chaim's home deeply shaken.
The encounter had completely altered their perspective on life.
"So much so," Rabbi Shlomo recalled, "that my friend suddenly decided not to go collect his travel stipend from the yeshiva office."
When Rabbi Shlomo asked him why, his friend explained:
"I have a small amount of money. It will be enough, with difficulty, to get me home. After what we just heard from the Chafetz Chaim, I no longer need additional comfort in this world."
In a few moments, he had gained a new understanding of what is truly important and what is merely temporary.
He understood the difference between the corridor and the banquet hall, between what is eternal and what is fleeting.
Nothing Can Be Hidden
Years later, Rabbi Shlomo would still recall that extraordinary encounter.
The Chafetz Chaim's words remained engraved upon his heart.
Above all, one message continued to echo in his ears:
"Nothing can be hidden."
The awareness of the Heavenly accounting awaiting every person stayed with him for the rest of his life.
And through his testimony, that powerful message continues to challenge and inspire future generations as well.
