The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) released footage today (Monday) showing the first operational deployment of a new maritime weapon system: suicide drone boats — unmanned surface vessels designed to destroy their targets by colliding with them and detonating on impact.
According to CENTCOM, this marks the first time U.S. forces have employed explosive unmanned surface vessels in a combat operation.
According to the U.S. military, the new weapons were used during last night's strike on a submarine and warship maintenance facility at the Iranian Navy base in Bandar Abbas, located on the shores of the Strait of Hormuz.
Several suicide drone boats were reportedly launched against the target as part of the operation.
CENTCOM stated that three Corsair unmanned surface vessels struck the port area of the Iranian naval base. U.S. officials emphasized that this was the first operational use of these explosive drone boats by American forces.
