Long summer days bring more sunlight, open windows, and plenty of activity around the house. But they also mean certain areas collect dust, dirt, and odors much faster than usual. Here are seven spots that deserve a little extra attention during the summer months.
1. Air Conditioner Filters
Your air conditioner works harder in the summer than at any other time of year. Dirty filters can reduce its efficiency and circulate dust throughout your home. Cleaning them regularly improves airflow and helps the unit run more effectively.
2. Window Screens
With windows open more often, screens quickly collect dust, pollen, and dirt from outside. Giving them a good cleaning helps fresh air flow more freely and instantly brightens the appearance of your windows.
3. Ceiling and Portable Fans
Many people pull their fans out of storage as soon as the weather heats up. Before turning them on, wipe down the blades thoroughly. Built-up dust can quickly spread throughout the room once the fan starts spinning.
4. The Refrigerator
Summer usually means more fresh produce, cold drinks, and frequent trips to the refrigerator. Take the opportunity to empty the shelves, wipe away spills, and check for expired or spoiled food.
5. Trash Cans
Warm weather causes odors to develop much more quickly. Even if you change the trash bag regularly, it's important to wash and disinfect the bin itself from time to time to prevent bacteria and unpleasant smells from building up.
6. Patio or Outdoor Furniture
Outdoor tables, chairs, and cushions can quickly accumulate dust, sand, pollen, and bird droppings. Before enjoying your patio or hosting guests, give everything a thorough cleaning.
7. Curtains and Blinds
Bright summer sunlight has a way of highlighting every layer of dust. Curtains and blinds often go unnoticed for months, but a quick wash or dusting can make the entire room feel cleaner and fresher.
A Little at a Time
You don't have to tackle everything in a single day. Choose one area each week and spend just a few minutes cleaning it. By the end of the season, your home will feel fresher, cleaner, and much easier to maintain.
