Teaching Near Israel’s Northern Border? You Could Receive Up to NIS 60,000

Israel’s Education Ministry, the Finance Ministry, and the "Tenufa" administration have unveiled a dedicated plan to strengthen the education system in northern Israel ahead of the coming school year (5787). The program, which is expected to continue for four years subject to lessons learned along the way, is based on a similar model already being implemented successfully in communities near the Gaza border.

At the heart of the plan is a special sign-on grant of up to NIS 60,000, to be given to new teaching staff who join educational institutions located within 9 kilometers of the border and who live within 30 kilometers of it. The grant will be available to those working at least one-third of a full position (with the full amount intended for a full-time role), and it will be paid in two installments — in the November and June paychecks.

The incentive is intended for teachers in core academic and technology fields, including math, English, computer science, physics, chemistry, and biology, alongside therapists, educational counselors, and kindergarten teachers.

In addition to the sign-on grant, teachers and kindergarten teachers who lead approved educational initiatives — such as promoting excellence, artificial intelligence, social cohesion, or emotional resilience — will receive an extra NIS 1,000 per month throughout the period of activity. The plan also includes a broad pedagogical support framework, including dedicated retraining tracks for academics in the north with three-year grants, alongside leadership development programs for principals.

Education Minister Yoav Kisch emphasized that the move is meant to give a boost to educators in the north: "The sign-on grants and encouragement of initiatives are the way to grow the human capital on which the future of the north and the future of the State of Israel will be built."
