The Grandparents Under One Roof Effect: Why Multigenerational Living Can Be a Win for Everyone

As more families embrace multigenerational households, research shows the arrangement can strengthen emotional well-being, build resilience in children, reduce risky behavior among teens, and help grandparents live happier, more meaningful lives

In recent years, there has been a remarkable rise in the number of families choosing to live in multigenerational households. According to data from the National Association of Realtors in the United States, a record 17% of home purchases were made for multigenerational households. While financial savings are often the initial motivation, psychologists say the greatest benefits lie in stronger family relationships and improved emotional well-being for both children and older adults.

Clinical psychologist Dr. Becky Fenton points to significant advantages for children who grow up with their grandparents. "One of the greatest benefits of a child living with grandparents is having a broader support system," she explains. "This gives children greater resilience because it provides the security of knowing that if they try something and fail, they have a larger safety net to rely on."

Research from Johns Hopkins Medicine supports this view, showing that a supportive home environment helps reduce stress and promotes healthier emotional development.

Family Meals Strengthen Emotional Health

Another important benefit of multigenerational living is the increased opportunity for shared family dinners. A study conducted by the Tufts University School of Medicine and published in the Journal of Aggression, Maltreatment & Trauma found that meaningful family meals are directly associated with lower rates of risky behavior among teenagers.

Lead researcher Dr. Margie Skeer described family meals as "a practical and accessible way to reduce risk among adolescents." She added that spending regular time together helps foster open, ongoing communication between parents and children.

Grandparents Benefit Too

The advantages of multigenerational living extend well beyond the younger generation.

Dr. Fenton notes that grandparents also experience profound emotional benefits from living with their grandchildren.

"Grandparents benefit enormously from spending time with their grandchildren," she says. "It serves as a protective factor against depression as they age because they feel connected to their family and believe they are living meaningful lives."

She adds that sharing a home encourages deeper family bonds, provides children with daily examples of respect across generations, and creates a nurturing, supportive environment where every member of the family can thrive.
