Major Wildfire Near Ben Shemen Forest Shuts Down Highways 6 and 1

A major fire broke out today (Tuesday) in an open area near Ben Shemen Forest, causing significant traffic disruptions across central Israel. As the flames spread and heavy smoke blanketed the area, major highways were closed. Dozens of firefighters, assisted by firefighting aircraft, are working to bring the blaze under control and prevent it from spreading further.

According to a police update, Highway 6 has been closed in both directions near the Daniel Interchange because of the heavy smoke and flames close to the roadway. Drivers are being redirected to Highway 444. At the same time, eastbound Highway 1 near Ben Shemen has also been closed, with traffic diverted to Highway 443 in an effort to ease congestion and allow emergency crews to operate safely.

At the scene, 14 firefighting teams from the Ayalon station are operating, joined by four firefighting aircraft dispatched to assist with the effort from the air. The main focus is on stopping the fire's advance, as it is spreading quickly due to strong winds in the area.

Israel Fire and Rescue officials say that the terrain and wind conditions are making firefighting efforts difficult. Crews on the ground report high flames and thick smoke visible from a distance, conditions that are also reducing visibility along nearby roads and requiring unusual safety measures, including the closure of major traffic routes. Israel Fire and Rescue has called on the public not to travel to the Ben Shemen Forest and Daniel Interchange area until the fire is under control.
