The intense heat wave and high temperatures of recent days are making sleep a challenge for anyone without air conditioning. When the heat is severe, the body has difficulty lowering its internal temperature, a process that normally helps prepare us for sleep. The result can be tossing and turning, frequent awakenings, and a significant decline in sleep quality.
The British consumer organization Which? has published a series of practical recommendations designed to make it easier to fall asleep during hot weather. One simple way to cool down quickly is to take a cool shower or soak your feet in cool water before getting into bed. This can help lower body temperature while providing an immediate feeling of relief.
Simple Ways to Cool Down Before Bed
Another unusual suggestion is to place a pair of socks in the refrigerator for a short time and put them on shortly before going to sleep. Choosing light, loose clothing may also help, particularly sleepwear made from natural, breathable fabrics that allow better airflow.
Experts also recommend avoiding strenuous exercise late in the evening, since vigorous physical activity raises body temperature and can make it more difficult for the body to settle down for sleep. Heavy, hot, or very spicy meals are also best avoided close to bedtime.
How to Make a Fan More Effective
For those using a fan, one suggestion is to place a bowl of ice directly in front of it, which may help circulate cooler-feeling air around the room. It is also a good idea to ventilate the room when outdoor temperatures drop and to keep windows and shutters closed during the hottest hours of the day.
Various other ideas have circulated on social media, including running the wrists under cold water or keeping a spray bottle of water beside the bed to lightly mist the skin or bedding.
Stay Hydrated and Take Extreme Heat Seriously
Not every cooling trick circulating online is supported by scientific evidence. The main goal is to help the body maintain a comfortable temperature while also making sure to drink enough water.
During extreme heat, additional caution is particularly important for older adults, babies, and people with underlying medical conditions. Be alert for signs of dehydration or heat-related illness, and follow appropriate medical guidance if concerning symptoms develop.
