Coconut Americano: The Iced Coffee Trend Everyone Is Talking About

Espresso, coconut water and ice come together in a surprisingly refreshing drink. Here’s why the Coconut Americano has gone viral, how to make it at home, and what to know about its nutritional benefits.

Some people simply refuse to let anyone mess with their coffee, and understandably so. They have been drinking the same espresso or Americano for years, and no matter how hard you try to convince them to add new flavors, they are not interested. If changing a classic cup of coffee sounds almost sacrilegious to you, this article probably is not for you.

This trend is for people who enjoy experimenting. And judging by the attention it has received on social media around the world, that appears to be quite a few people. After Dalgona coffee, cold brew, whipped coffee, and countless colorful creations, one of the coffee drinks that attracted significant attention in 2025 and 2026 is surprisingly simple: espresso, ice, and coconut water.

It is called the Coconut Americano, and at first glance, it looks almost like an ordinary iced Americano. The difference becomes obvious with the first sip.

Instead of the neutral water used in a traditional Americano, coconut water adds a subtle sweetness and a slightly tropical flavor. Coconut water in coffee may sound like an unusual combination, but once you taste it, the idea makes more sense. A regular Americano consists of espresso and water, so the concept behind the trend is simple: keep the espresso and replace the ordinary water with coconut water.

There is one important distinction, however: coconut water is not the same as coconut milk.

Coconut milk is a white, higher-fat liquid made from coconut flesh. Coconut water is the relatively clear liquid found naturally inside a young coconut. It consists primarily of water but also contains carbohydrates and minerals, including potassium. When combined with espresso, it creates an unexpected contrast: the bitterness of the coffee meets the delicate sweetness of coconut water.

In 2025, reports linked much of the online popularity of the Iced Coconut Americano to Rhythm Zero, a New York coffee shop that served a version combining espresso and coconut water. Videos of people recreating the drink at home helped turn it into a social media trend.

Why Does the Combination Work?

Coconut water is not as sweet as fruit juice, so it does not necessarily overpower the flavor of the coffee. Instead, its mild sweetness can soften some of espresso’s bitterness. Coconut water can also have a slightly salty quality, and the combination may bring out certain flavors in the coffee.

The drink may therefore appeal even to people who do not enjoy heavily sweetened coffee.

Is a Coconut Americano Healthier?

Coconut water contains electrolytes, including potassium, which is one reason it has become popular as a hydration drink. However, that does not mean adding coconut water suddenly transforms coffee into a “health drink,” nor does it necessarily make a Coconut Americano healthier for everyone than a regular Americano.

Unlike plain water, coconut water also contains carbohydrates and naturally occurring sugars. According to nutritional data based on USDA figures, 100 grams of unsweetened, ready-to-drink coconut water contains approximately 18 calories and 4.2 grams of carbohydrates.

Anyone trying to significantly limit carbohydrates or sugar should take this into account. It is also worth checking the ingredient list on the package. If you are going to try the trend, choosing coconut water with no added sugar is generally the better option.

Does Coconut Water Cancel Out Coffee’s “Dehydrating” Effect?

This is one of the claims sometimes made about the trend, but it should be treated cautiously. Coconut water does provide fluids and electrolytes, but ordinary coffee does not need to be viewed as a drink that inevitably dehydrates the body.

The more straightforward benefit of a Coconut Americano is simply that it provides additional fluid and some minerals while offering a different flavor. There is no need to attribute special medical benefits to it.

How to Make a Coconut Americano at Home

For one glass, you will need:

150 to 200 ml cold coconut water with no added sugar
1 to 2 shots of espresso
Plenty of ice

Fill a glass with ice and pour in the cold coconut water. Prepare the espresso and slowly pour it over the coconut water.

Want It Sweeter or Less Bitter? Try These Variations

There is no single “correct” ratio, so you can adjust the quantities until you find the balance you prefer.

If you like strong coffee, use two shots of espresso and slightly less coconut water. If you prefer something milder and sweeter, increase the amount of coconut water.

You can also add a little cinnamon, a drop of vanilla extract, or a layer of foam on top. Another variation circulating online is “Cloud Coffee,” in which the coffee and coconut water base is topped with a light, fluffy layer of foam.

For your first attempt, however, it is probably worth trying the simplest version: espresso, coconut water, and ice. If it is not sweet enough for you, add a small amount of sugar and gradually experiment until you find the combination you like best.

No Espresso Machine?

Not having an espresso machine does not mean you have to miss out on the trend. Strong instant coffee can also work, although the flavor will naturally be different.

Some homemade Coconut Americano recipes suggest alternatives to espresso, but the important thing is to avoid using too much diluted coffee. Otherwise, the finished drink can become watery and lose its distinctive flavor.

The Mistake That Can Ruin Your Coconut Americano

Ironically, the ingredient most likely to ruin the drink is the coconut water itself.

There can be major flavor differences between brands. Some coconut waters are sweeter, while others taste slightly salty or nutty, and some products contain added sugar. Since coconut water makes up most of the drink, its flavor has a major impact on the final result.

A good rule is to start with coconut water that you already enjoy drinking on its own.

Also, all ingredients should be very cold. Cold coconut water, plenty of ice, and espresso poured over the top produce a much more refreshing drink than combining lukewarm coffee with room-temperature coconut water.

So, Is It Actually Good?

This is where science cannot give you the answer.

If you love your coffee intensely bitter and completely unadulterated, you may find that coconut water gets in the way. And if you dislike the flavor of coconut, this trend is unlikely to win you over.

If however you enjoy iced Americanos and want a touch of sweetness without adding flavored syrup or several teaspoons of sugar, the Coconut Americano may be worth trying. That may be exactly why this remarkably simple coffee trend has managed to stick around.
