Congo’s Ebola Case Count Surpasses 6,000
The Congolese government says the virus has claimed about 2,900 lives in what it calls the country’s largest disaster in its history. Neighboring Uganda also reported deaths from the virus.
The Democratic Republic of Congo announced today (Monday) that the number of confirmed Ebola cases in the country has surpassed 6,000. The government said the current outbreak is considered the largest and fastest in the country’s history.
The local Health Ministry reported a total of 6,000 confirmed cases, including 2,862 related deaths, as of yesterday. There are 896 patients hospitalized in isolation. This marks an increase of 82 newly confirmed cases and 38 deaths since last week’s previous report. So far, 1,327 people have recovered.
Meanwhile, neighboring Uganda announced that, as of today, it has 20 confirmed cases, including two deaths. The most recent confirmed case was reported on June 21, and no new cases have been reported since then. As a result, the World Health Organization declared the Ebola outbreak in Uganda over the day before yesterday.
As previously reported, the Ebola virus began spreading in Congo in May of this year. Last month, an imported case involving an American citizen who was medically evacuated to Germany for treatment was also reported, and on June 24, 2026, the Health Ministry reported another imported case in France. Both cases were imported from areas affected by the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
