In the days leading up to the holiday, we are often busy cooking, cleaning, and running errands, leaving little time for ourselves. The good news is that you do not need an elaborate beauty routine. A few simple steps before bed can help your skin and hair look fresher and more rested in the morning.
Remove Makeup and Dirt Thoroughly
Even after a busy day, it is worth taking a few minutes to cleanse your face. Leftover makeup, sunscreen, sweat, and oil can build up on the skin and leave it feeling less fresh in the morning.
If you wore long-lasting makeup, start with makeup remover or an oil-based cleanser, then follow with a gentle facial cleanser. Avoid aggressive cleansing, which can disrupt the skin’s natural protective barrier and lead to dryness, redness, and irritation.
Restore Moisture to Your Skin
After cleansing, apply a moisturizer that suits your skin type. Moisturizer will not transform your skin overnight, but it can reduce dryness and help your face look smoother and feel more comfortable.
Ingredients such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and ceramides can help attract and retain moisture. If your skin is especially dry, choose a richer cream. Oily or blemish-prone skin will generally do better with a lighter moisturizer.
This Is Not the Night to Try Something New
The night before the holiday is not the time to experiment with a strong mask, deep peel, or active product you have never used before. Even a high-quality product can cause stinging, peeling, or redness if it does not agree with your skin.
Stick to familiar products that you already know work well for you. If you regularly use retinol, acids, or other potentially irritating products, do not apply extra in the hope of getting faster results.
Treat the Eye Area Gently
An eye cream can provide moisture, temporarily improve the appearance of dry skin, and make the delicate eye area feel more comfortable.
If your eyes tend to look puffy in the morning, prepare a clean cold compress in advance. Place it gently over your closed eyes for a few minutes after waking. The cold may temporarily reduce puffiness, although it will not address its underlying cause.
Get Your Hair Ready
Wash your hair only if it fits your regular routine, and try to dry it thoroughly before going to bed. Sleeping with wet hair can contribute to tangles and leave it harder to manage in the morning.
You can apply a small amount of a familiar serum or cream to the ends, comb your hair gently, and loosely tie it back. A soft hair tie or loose braid can help reduce tangles overnight.
Sleep on a Clean Pillowcase
A clean pillowcase provides a fresh sleeping surface and reduces contact with accumulated oil, sweat, and hair product residue.
There is no need to invest in an expensive or special fabric. Simply switching to a clean, comfortable pillowcase before bed is an easy addition to your routine.
Stay Hydrated Throughout the Day
Drinking enough throughout the day is important for your overall health. Rather than trying to make up for inadequate hydration right before bed, drink according to your thirst and needs throughout the day.
Drinking large amounts immediately before sleeping may mean more trips to the bathroom, which can interfere with a good night’s rest.
Sleep Is the Most Important Beauty Step
Lack of sleep can show up as puffy eyes, a tired appearance, and low energy. No face mask can replace a good night’s rest, so whenever possible, try to finish your holiday preparations at a reasonable hour.
Dim the lights, put your phone away, and prepare your clothes, makeup, and accessories for the morning in advance. A little organization at night can reduce morning stress and give you more time to sleep.
What Should You Do the Morning Before the Holiday?
In the morning, wash your face gently or use a mild cleanser, depending on your skin’s needs. Apply moisturizer and sunscreen if you will be outside during the day. If you plan to wear makeup, give your skincare products a few minutes to absorb before applying it.
If your face looks puffy, try a cold compress or very gentle facial massage. Avoid pressing firmly or placing ice directly against your skin.
Most importantly, keep things simple. The goal is not to transform your appearance overnight, but to arrive at the holiday feeling fresh, comfortable, and rested.
