U.S. Airman Survives Fall Over Iran: “It’s a Modern-Day Miracle”

Not even years of military training could have fully prepared “Bravo,” a U.S. Air Force officer, for what he experienced nearly three months ago.

Bravo was serving as the weapons systems officer in a two-seat fighter jet when the aircraft was struck by an Iranian missile. The pilot, known as “Alpha,” initially tried to keep the damaged aircraft in the air. But as its condition rapidly deteriorated, he made the decision to activate the ejection system and get them both out.

Bravo says he owes his life to the pilot. But surviving the ejection was only the beginning.

The missile strike had damaged his parachute, something he discovered only after he was already falling through the air.

“Instead of gradually descending to the ground, I found myself in free fall, with no control over my descent,” he recalls.

Bravo desperately tried to understand what had happened, pulling at parts of the parachute and attempting to get it to open.

“When I looked up, I understood just how serious my situation was. I couldn’t see a parachute at all,” he says.

It was at that moment that he began to pray.

“I Didn’t Know Whether I Would Survive”

“I didn’t know whether I would survive the hard impact with the ground,” Bravo told the interviewer.

Against the odds, he did survive. But the impact left him with fractures in his back, arm, and shoulder. According to additional reports, he also suffered an ankle injury and cuts to his head and face.

Yet staying where he was and waiting for medical help was not an option. Bravo had landed deep inside Iranian territory.

Alpha had also survived the descent, but he landed several miles away, leaving the two crew members separated.

The danger was far from over.

With Broken Bones, He Started Climbing

Despite the pain from his injuries, Bravo understood that he needed to get away from the area before Iranian forces could find him.

According to reports, he began making his way toward a mountain ridge around 7,000 feet above sea level, relying on the survival and enemy-evasion training he had received.

The challenge was extraordinary. After falling from the sky and suffering a broken back and other injuries, he now had to keep moving, climb through difficult terrain, and remain hidden.

For nearly two days, Bravo remained behind enemy lines.

“During that time, Alpha was located and rescued within hours, but in my case it was more complicated,” he says.

The effort to find him developed into a large-scale military rescue operation. According to CBS, more than 90 American special forces personnel were involved on the ground at various stages, supported by aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, and additional forces. Footage that was later cleared for release captured some of the moments surrounding the rescue of the two crew members.

Nearly 50 Hours Behind Enemy Lines

Bravo has now revealed details he had previously declined to discuss.

“I hid deep in the mountains for nearly 50 hours, until the rescuers were able to reach me. I tried not to be discovered and to keep moving despite my severe injuries.”

Only later did he learn just how close the danger had come. According to Bravo, Iranian forces were at one point within a few hundred meters of the area where he was hiding.

Members of an Air Force rescue unit reached him first.

Seeing his rescuers, he said, was “one of the greatest and most moving moments of my life.”

The story gained widespread attention after Bravo began speaking publicly about the ordeal months later. Videos from the rescue operation, which had previously been classified, were also cleared for release.

“It’s a Modern-Day Miracle”

For Bravo, however, his survival cannot be explained by military training alone.

“I don’t attribute it solely to the training I received,” he told the interviewer, repeatedly returning to his faith and the prayer he said as he fell through the air.

When asked how he explains surviving the fall, his answer was simple:

“It’s a modern-day miracle.”
