White House Warns of Possible Escalation in the Middle East

Amid tensions in the Middle East and concerns over an unexpected escalation, the U.S. administration today (Sunday) called on its citizens to reconsider travel to the Middle East region, including Israel.

The White House statement said: "Due to tensions in the Middle East, the security environment remains complex, with the potential for unexpected escalation. Americans currently in the Middle East should exercise increased vigilance and be aware of possible flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions."

"The Iran-backed Houthis have been involved in hostilities against Saudi Arabia, including against civilian airports. This military conflict has the potential to escalate rapidly. Americans outside the Middle East should seriously reconsider travel to and through the region. Those who do travel to or from the region should follow information regarding airport and airline operations."

"U.S. diplomatic facilities, including those outside the Middle East, will be targets. Iran and Iran-backed groups may target other American interests overseas or locations associated with the United States and Americans around the world, including American businesses and other institutions. Follow instructions."

American media reported that President Donald Trump cut short his weekend vacation at Camp David and returned to the White House. In addition, all of his meetings for today were canceled. According to reports, the warning to citizens applies to countries including Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, Bahrain, Iraq, Lebanon, Oman, and Israel. It is believed that if the war between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis expands, the United States may view action against the Houthis favorably, with an emphasis on trying to free the Bab el-Mandeb Strait from Houthi control.
