U.K. Police Foil Alleged Plot Targeting Manchester’s Jewish Community
Two men in their 30s were arrested on suspicion of planning an attack against the Jewish community in the Manchester area. British police said the plot was thwarted and that there is currently no ongoing threat to the public.
British police have arrested two men in their 30s on suspicion of involvement in a terror plot intended to target the Jewish community in the Manchester area. The two were arrested on the eve of Yom Kippur on suspicion of offenses under Britain’s terrorism law, following a lengthy investigation by the counterterrorism unit.
After their arrest, the suspects were taken to a police station in London. Today, Tuesday, warrants were issued allowing them to remain in custody until next Sunday. At the same time, as part of the investigation, police conducted searches at several addresses in Liverpool and Salford, near Manchester.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans, the national coordinator for the counterterrorism unit, said: "This was a proactive and lengthy investigation, which led to the disruption of what we believe was a plot to harm the Jewish community in the Manchester area."
Evans also addressed the concern the case may cause among local Jews. She said police are aware that the news will heighten anxiety within the Jewish community, "especially during the holiday period." However, she clarified that at this stage, there is no assessment of an ongoing threat to the public connected to the case. The investigation is expected to continue in the coming days.
The arrests came nearly a year after the deadly attack at the "Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation" synagogue in the Crumpsall neighborhood of north Manchester. On October 2, 2025, Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66, were murdered in the attack. Three other people were seriously injured in the attack, which involved a vehicle ramming and stabbing near the synagogue. The attacker was shot dead by police officers who arrived at the scene.
