A Surprise at the U.S. Ambassador’s Office: “This Is the First Time I’ve Ever Seen an Etrog"

An unusual moment took place in the office of U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, when a delegation of Jewish leaders arrived to present him with a surprising, deeply symbolic gift: a beautiful Chazon Ish etrog. The meeting, meant to recognize Huckabee’s steadfast, long-standing friendship with the Jewish people, took an especially personal and moving turn when the ambassador looked at the fruit in amazement and candidly admitted that it was the first time in his life he had seen an etrog up close.

The gift was presented to the ambassador by Rabbi Chaim Michael Guterman, director of the Shuvu organization, together with Rabbi Dovi Honig, founder and CEO of the Orthodox Chamber of Commerce. Behind the gesture was a layered and meaningful message centered on the strength of the etrog and its unique symbolism.

Rabbi Guterman spoke about a unique botanical wonder of the etrog: “Unlike most fruits, the etrog has the unique ability to remain on the tree through all four seasons of the year. As it endures scorching heat, heavy rains, and fierce winds, it continues to grow and become stronger. This trait is a powerful metaphor for Klal Yisrael: a nation that remains connected to its roots, thrives through challenges, and overcomes every obstacle throughout the generations.” The rabbi also noted that in Jewish tradition, the etrog represents the human heart, a direct tribute to Huckabee’s generous heart and moral courage.

“This was far more than a ceremonial presentation; it was a historic connection between true friends,” Rabbi Dovi Honig said after the meeting, which highlighted the close and deep ties between them.
