Israel, Morocco to Upgrade Diplomatic Missions to Full Embassies

Israel and Morocco have agreed to upgrade their diplomatic missions to full embassies and appoint ambassadors as part of a broader expansion of bilateral ties.

Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita reached the agreement during a meeting in New York hosted by US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz.

The two countries currently operate diplomatic missions rather than full embassies. Under the agreement, both sides will elevate the missions and exchange ambassadors.

“The friendship between the Moroccan and Jewish peoples has deep roots and a rich history,” Sa’ar said following the meeting.

“The declaration we signed today outlines practical ways to upgrade ties between Israel and Morocco for the benefit of both peoples, and we will work to implement it,” he added.

Israel and Morocco will also work to complete agreements on investment protection and the prevention of double taxation by the end of 2026. Officials said the measures are intended to encourage investment and strengthen trade and economic ties.

The meeting took place one day after the sixth anniversary of the Abraham Accords.

Morocco resumed formal diplomatic relations with Israel in December 2020 as part of the US-brokered normalization agreements. Since then, the two countries have expanded cooperation in areas including tourism, trade and security.

The latest agreement marks another step in the development of the relationship by raising diplomatic representation to the ambassadorial level.
