Less Than a Month Before Elections, IDF Chief Cancels U.S. Trip Amid Security Concerns

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir canceled his planned visit to the United States in October, military censorship cleared for publication this morning (Wednesday). The decision was made following an operational situation assessment and amid heightened IDF alert across all fronts.

Zamir had been invited to the United States by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine for professional and strategic coordination meetings next week. During the visit, he was also expected to meet with the commander of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and discuss military cooperation against Iran and other threats with senior officials. The chief of staff was also invited to the annual FIDF gala evening.

The trip had previously been planned several times but was postponed due to operational circumstances. This time, Zamir told his hosts that given the security situation and heightened alert, he believed it was not right to be away from Israel and manage events from afar.

The IDF sees the Tishrei holiday period, events marking three years since October 7, and the approaching elections as a combination creating an especially sensitive period. The chief of staff has also instructed commanders to remain in their sectors, as the military prepares for tactical incidents that could quickly develop into a broader escalation.

Zamir's decision came even before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's unusual warning. During a visit to the Tel Nof Air Force Base, Netanyahu said that ahead of the elections, set to take place in less than a month, "our enemies will try to attack us."
