Do Cucumber Slices Reduce Puffy Eyes?

Cold cucumber slices may help soothe mild under-eye puffiness, but the cooling effect is likely doing most of the work

aA

Cucumber slices placed over the eyes have become one of the most familiar home remedies associated with skincare. They are commonly used in spa treatments and at-home beauty routines. But does cucumber actually have special properties that reduce puffiness, or would any cold object have a similar effect?

The answer has more to do with temperature than with cucumber itself.

What Causes Puffy Eyes?

Mild puffiness around the eyes can appear after sleep, crying, eating a lot of salt, allergies, or temporary fluid buildup in the area. The skin around the eyes is especially thin and delicate, and therefore even small changes can be noticeable.

When cold cucumber slices are placed over closed eyes, the cool temperature can temporarily constrict blood vessels and help reduce mild swelling. Cucumbers are also very high in water, which gives the skin a cool and refreshing sensation.

Interestingly, the cucumber itself may not be essential. A clean, cool washcloth or cold compress can also help with mild puffiness. Much of the well-known effect of cucumber slices is likely because they are cold, moist, and easy to rest over the eyes.

For Best Results

You can chill a cucumber in the refrigerator, cut two clean slices, and gently place them over closed eyes for a few minutes. There is no need to freeze them, and cucumber or cucumber liquid should never be placed directly into the eye.

Keep in mind that this trick is intended only for mild, temporary puffiness. If the swelling is significant, painful, accompanied by discharge or changes in vision, or does not go away, it is best to investigate the cause rather than rely on a home remedy.
