Trump’s brief statement came after reports in Arab media that the United States is considering a multi-day strike on Iran, which could potentially take place even before the U.S. midterm elections.
At the same time, CNN reported that the U.S. military has developed new strike plans for Iran that include the possible use of the “Mother of All Bombs” (MOAB) against infrastructure targets and nuclear sites. If the United States were to use the GBU-43/B for the first time in combat against Iran, it would mark a significant escalation. The GBU-43/B is the largest non-nuclear bomb in the U.S. arsenal.
According to the report, a U.S. official told CNN that Trump had instructed the military to develop additional strike packages against Iran, including “numerous energy infrastructure targets” and the option of using the MOAB.
The same source said the language being used was that the strike would take place “before the U.S. withdrawal from the area of responsibility of United States Central Command (CENTCOM).” This could indicate that the administration may carry out additional strikes, attempt to declare victory, and then rapidly withdraw all forces.
Another source told the U.S. network that military plans for striking Iran’s nuclear sites, including Kuh-e Kolang Gaz La, explicitly call for the use of a MOAB bomb.
