12-Year-Old Boy Saves His Mother After She Faints Behind the Wheel
A mother fainted while driving on a highway in Wales. Her 12-year-old son's quick thinking prevented tragedy and earned him a national award.

A 12-year-old boy from Wales is being hailed as a hero after taking control of a moving car when his mother suddenly lost consciousness behind the wheel. Traveling at around 60 mph, the boy managed to steer the vehicle to safety, call emergency services, and prevent what could have been a devastating accident.
The remarkable story of Nicola Crump and her son, Zac Howells, has recently captured attention on social media, although the frightening incident actually took place ten months ago.
A Terrifying Moment on the Highway
The mother and son had set off from their hometown in Wales for a market approximately 100 miles away. About half an hour into their journey, Nicola suddenly began feeling unwell while driving along the highway.
"I felt hot," she recalled in an interview with local media. "I said, 'Zac, I don't feel well. I think I need to pull over.'"
Nicola managed to reach the shoulder of the road, but before she could bring the car to a complete stop, she lost consciousness.
"When I fainted, my foot locked on the pedal and the car started moving," she explained. "The next thing I remember is waking up on the other side of the road, completely confused."
With his mother unconscious and the vehicle accelerating, Zac suddenly found himself facing a terrifying situation.
"I started screaming and panicking, but then I calmed down and started functioning," he recalled.
Despite his fear, the 12-year-old managed to grab the steering wheel and guide the car onto the median separating the lanes, bringing it to a stop.
He then immediately called emergency services, using the car's navigation system to provide dispatchers with their exact location.
When Nicola regained consciousness, she had no idea what had happened.
"I asked, 'Did we have an accident?'" she recalled. "Zac said, 'Yes, Mom, but we're okay. Don't worry.'"
It was only when she reached for her son's hand that she realized just how frightened he had been. He was shaking all over.
Paramedics who arrived at the scene discovered that Nicola's blood pressure was extremely low. After assessing the situation, the ambulance crew took the mother and son to a nearby café.
It was there that the reality of their narrow escape began to sink in.
"The woman working there started crying when she heard what happened," Nicola said. "That's when I started to understand how serious it could have been."
Young Hero Honored for His Courage
Although ten months have passed since the incident, the cause of Nicola's sudden loss of consciousness remains unclear.
Meanwhile, Zac, who has since celebrated his 13th birthday, has returned to his normal routine of school, friends, and sports. But his extraordinary courage has not gone unnoticed.
The young hero was honored with the Child of Courage award at Britain's prestigious Pride of Britain Awards, which recognize people who have demonstrated exceptional bravery and kindness.
Zac had initially been led to believe he was participating in the filming of a documentary and had no idea that he was about to receive an award.
The ceremony, held this week at a luxury hotel in London, brought renewed attention to the family's story and the boy's remarkable actions.
For Nicola, the experience has left her with an important message for other parents.
She hopes families will take the time to talk to their children about what to do if an adult suddenly becomes unwell while driving, including how to call for help and explain their location to emergency services.
"If anyone can learn something from this, maybe it's to have that conversation," she said.
Thanks to Zac's quick thinking and courage, what could have ended in tragedy became a story of survival, and a reminder that even a child can make an extraordinary difference in an emergency.
