US President Donald Trump has not ruled out the possibility of becoming involved in talks to form Israel’s next government. In an interview with Axios on Wednesday, amid emerging election results and before the counting of special double-envelope ballots was completed, he was asked whether he would help establish a unity government led by Benjamin Netanyahu. He responded: “I haven't considered getting involved yet in order to help form a national unity government led by Netanyahu, but I will look into the matter.”

Trump, who publicly campaigned for Netanyahu during the election season, believes his support helped turn Netanyahu’s political fortunes around. In a post on Truth Social, he referred to himself in the third person, writing: “When President Trump expressed support for Bibi Netanyahu, the whole trend reversed.” According to Trump, what initially appeared to be a significant defeat turned into a close race that could even end in victory.

His remarks follow similar statements made before polls opened. A day before the elections for Israel’s 26th Knesset, Trump urged Israelis to vote for Netanyahu, highlighting their cooperation and military achievements. He cited the US strike in Venezuela, Operations Midnight Hammer and Epic Fury against Iran, and the damage inflicted on Iran’s navy, air force, army, economy, and leadership. He also said the naval blockade had prevented Iran from obtaining oil.

About a week and a half earlier, Trump published another letter of support, praising Netanyahu for standing firm under pressure and for his partnership in the fight against Iran. The president warned that if Tehran did not change its ways, the US would finish the job.

In the same letter, Trump made clear that, in his view, any Israeli leader other than Netanyahu would be the wrong choice, even suggesting that the US might be forced to act independently. He summed up his position with the statement: “This is the kind of partner the U.S. requires from Israel.”
