An 11-year-old fifth grader from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is being hailed as a hero after her quick thinking helped save the life of her school bus driver during a frightening medical emergency.

Bella Scott, a student at Viola Gibson Elementary School, noticed that her bus driver, Kristin Houston, was struggling to breathe during the ride home from school. Rather than ignoring the warning signs, Bella repeatedly called her father, setting in motion a chain of events that brought emergency medical assistance to the driver.

A Routine Bus Ride Takes a Frightening Turn

What began as an ordinary trip home quickly became an emergency when Bella noticed something was wrong with Houston.

The driver was coughing repeatedly, wheezing, and breathing heavily. She was also having difficulty speaking, and her voice sounded noticeably different from usual.

Recognizing that Houston needed help, Bella took her phone out of her backpack and called her father.

When she couldn't immediately reach him, she kept trying. She eventually explained what was happening and shared the bus's location so he could find them.

Her father, who was nearby, arrived shortly afterward in a golf cart.

Houston recalled the moment she spotted him approaching.

"When I saw the golf cart, I asked: Is that your dad? That's your dad!" she said. "That's when I realized I really did need help."

A Phone Call That May Have Saved a Life

When Bella's father reached the bus and saw Houston's condition, he immediately recognized the seriousness of the situation and called emergency services.

Medical personnel arrived and treated Houston, who had suffered a severe asthma attack.

During an asthma attack, the airways become inflamed and narrow, making it difficult for air to move in and out of the lungs. Severe attacks can become life-threatening without prompt treatment.

For Houston, the experience was terrifying. She had reached the point where she could barely breathe or speak.

"Coughing fits are one thing, but not being able to breathe was traumatic and frightening for me," she told a local television station.

Houston credited Bella's quick response and her father's intervention with helping save her life.

"Not All Heroes Wear Capes"

Despite her young age, Bella understood that the situation required immediate action.

"You can't see something like that happen and do nothing," she told American media. "I'm proud of myself for acting the way I did."

Houston was equally appreciative of the young student's courage and awareness.

"She saved my life. She really saved me — not all heroes wear capes," the driver said.

Houston also praised Bella's father for responding so quickly.

"She had a phone in her backpack, and she recognized the distress in time. Her dad is a hero too."

What makes Bella's actions especially remarkable is how quickly she recognized that something was seriously wrong. While she could not provide medical treatment herself, she knew how to reach someone who could help.

Her determination to contact her father, communicate the emergency, and share their location helped ensure that Houston received medical attention.

The incident is a powerful reminder that even children can make a life-saving difference by recognizing signs of distress and seeking help.

For Houston, one student's attentiveness turned an ordinary school bus ride into a story of extraordinary courage.
