Use under Section 27ANine people were killed Sunday when a Learjet 60 business jet crashed near Cresthaven in Palm Beach County, Florida. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that everyone aboard the aircraft had died. The plane had departed from Austin, Texas, and was headed to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas.
The crash occurred at approximately 12:50 p.m. near the entrance to a mobile home community. Footage from the scene showed the aircraft striking the ground and bursting into flames, leaving a large crater in the roadway. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said debris was scattered across a wide area and that no additional casualties on the ground had been reported at the time of his statement.
The incident took place in the same county as President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate. According to reports, Trump had departed the area approximately an hour before the crash.
Heightened Airspace Security Around Palm Beach
The crash occurred amid heightened aviation security measures in the Palm Beach area. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and U.S. Northern Command confirmed that air defense systems had been deployed at the request of the Secret Service, including two Avenger systems equipped with short-range Stinger missiles.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) also imposed flight restrictions within a radius of approximately 30 nautical miles around Palm Beach, covering drones and private aircraft.
Last week, an F-16 fighter jet was dispatched to intercept a civilian aircraft that had entered the restricted airspace. The aircraft exited the area safely after authorities established contact with its pilot.
Authorities Investigate Cause of Crash
Following Sunday's crash, sections of Military Trail were closed, and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office urged motorists to use alternative routes. Emergency crews responded to the scene, while residents of the nearby mobile home community were evacuated to shelters.
Aviation authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The cause has not yet been determined.
