A Remarkable Act of Forgiveness After a Tragic Accident

An Australian couple who lost their four-year-old son in a devastating car crash have asked the court to show mercy to the elderly driver responsible, making an extraordinary plea for compassion despite their grief

The parents of a four-year-old boy who was killed after being struck by a car in January have asked a court to impose the lightest possible sentence on the elderly driver responsible for his death, so that she can spend the rest of her life surrounded by her children and grandchildren.

The tragedy occurred near a shopping center in the suburb of Mawson, Australia. According to police, the driver, Maureen Brew, who was 80 at the time, had pulled into a parking space but failed to put her vehicle into park. When she opened the glove compartment, her foot slipped off the brake, causing the car to roll forward. In a moment of panic, she pressed the accelerator instead of the brake.

The vehicle mounted the sidewalk and struck four-year-old Osel Pokhrel, who was sitting in a shopping cart, before coming to a stop inside a nearby store. His parents and at least 25 bystanders desperately tried to reach him, with four people crawling over shattered glass to rescue him from beneath the car. Despite their efforts, the young boy died shortly afterward.

Grieving Parents Make Extraordinary Plea for Leniency

Osel's family, originally from Bhutan, lived in the nearby town of Queanbeyan. Brew, now 81, pleaded guilty to causing death by negligent driving. During a court hearing this week, a victim impact statement from Osel's parents, Prakash and Chura Pokhrel, was presented, describing the profound grief they have endured since losing their son.

"Osel was a very loving child. He never hurt anyone, and he cherished his family deeply," they wrote. "Four years were not enough for us, and that should not have been all the time he was given."

Despite their devastating loss, the parents went on to make an extraordinary request of the court. "If the court can take this into consideration, we respectfully ask that she receive the lightest possible sentence," they wrote, explaining that they wanted Brew to be able to spend the remainder of her life surrounded by her children and grandchildren.

Driver Expresses Remorse as Court Considers Sentence

Brew, whose statement was also read aloud in court, described the tragedy as a "split-second accident" and expressed deep remorse for the suffering she had caused. "I have not stopped thinking about the family, who have suffered so much more," she wrote, adding that she felt humbled and grateful that Osel's parents had expressed no resentment toward her.

Brew's defense team requested a suspended prison sentence, arguing that she should not be required to serve time in custody. The prosecutor, however, maintained that the circumstances reflected "a series of negligent decisions" rather than a single momentary mistake. According to the prosecution, Brew had pressed the accelerator all the way down in a state of panic, and a suspended sentence would fail to reflect the seriousness of the offense.

Judge Belinda Baker paid particular attention to the parents' statement, acknowledging the compassion they had demonstrated despite their grief. "I thank the parents again for an incredibly powerful and noble statement," she said. The judge is expected to sentence Brew at a later date.

The case has drawn attention not only because of the devastating circumstances surrounding Osel's death, but also because of his parents' remarkable decision to respond with mercy. While mourning the loss of their young son, they asked the court to consider the remaining years of the woman responsible, expressing a wish that another family not be separated by the tragedy that has already changed their lives forever.
