The United States is expanding its efforts to restrict Iran’s military and economic activities. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced today (Saturday) the establishment of a dedicated task force to enforce the land blockade against Iran and prevent smuggling across its borders. The move follows the resumption of the U.S. naval blockade in July.

The new task force, named “Iron Gate,” will consist of approximately 20 personnel and operate from CENTCOM headquarters in Tampa, Florida. It will coordinate efforts among various U.S. government agencies to prevent the transfer of advanced weapons systems, dual-use technologies, unauthorized materials, and revenues generated through illicit activities. Operations will focus on Iran’s land borders and transportation routes across the Caspian Sea.

CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper addressed the expansion of operations, stating: “The establishment of Task Force Iron Gate builds on the success of our tight maritime blockade of Iran. Strengthening CENTCOM’s cooperation with other U.S. government agencies will further restrict Iran’s ability to finance terrorism, rebuild weapons production facilities, and replenish its military equipment stockpiles.”

According to figures released by CENTCOM, the naval blockade imposed on Iran has prevented the country from exporting more than $25 billion worth of crude oil in recent months.

The announcement comes amid diplomatic negotiations between Washington and Tehran, mediated by Qatar. Reports yesterday indicated that Iran had expressed willingness to discuss aspects of its nuclear program that it had previously refused to address during negotiations.

However, later in the evening, reports emerged that the talks had reached a deadlock or had even collapsed entirely. Qatari officials quickly denied those reports.
