Do I need to wait six hours after tasting meaty sauce?
Question
If I took a small bite of chicken, am I supposed to wait six hours even if I only tasted meaty sauce? Thank you
Answer
Greetings,
A. Even if you ate any piece of meat (even less than the size of a kezayit), you must wait six hours before eating dairy (this is supported by what was written in Derech Teshuvah, siman 480, section 16, in the name of the Yad Yehudah; and is also mentioned in the book Yalkut Yosef, Issur Veheter, part 3, page 675. This is not in line with what was mentioned in Teshuvot Emek HaTeshuvah, part 6, siman 310).
B. If you tasted meat sauce and swallowed it, you must wait six hours; however, if you only tasted it with your tongue and then spat it out, there is no need to wait six hours (this is recorded by Rav Shimon Kluger, zt"l, in his annotations on the Pri Megadim, Yoreh De'ah, siman 480, and brought in Derech Teshuvah, section 10, 22, and in Kaf Hachaim, letter 4; furthermore, this was also stated by Zevach Tzedek, letter 5, and in Teshuvot Kafei Aharon, siman 30, and in the book Emet L'Yaakov, Yoreh De'ah, siman 480, note 35), and you may rinse your mouth and eat dairy afterwards.
With blessings,
Hillel Meirs
