Final Blessing on Ice Cream
Question
I heard from someone that one does not say a final blessing after eating ice cream. Is this correct according to Rabbi Ovadia Yosef ztz"l? Thank you
Answer
Hello,
According to the opinion of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef ztz"l, one who eats ice cream, even if they ate a volume of a quarter of a log (ravit) within the time it takes to eat a log, does not recite a final blessing. This is because the status of ice cream is like that of a drink, where a final blessing is only recited if one drank a quarter of a log (about 86 ml) within a duration of 4-5 seconds.
Sources: Responsa Yabia Omer, Volume 5 (Orach Chaim, end of section 18), and Volume 8 (Orach Chaim, section 25, end of letter 6), and Hazon Ovadia on Blessings (page 250, para. "And seemingly"). Also see in the book Halacha Berura, Volume 10 (section 276, paragraph 14). However, see in the book Piskei Teshuvot (section 276, letter 2, para. "And regarding") who holds that in most cases of eating ice cream, if one ate a volume of an olive (about 27 grams) within a time duration of 4 minutes, they should recite a final blessing.
