The Surprising Fruit That Can Reduce Bloating

Lower in calories and more satisfying than chocolate, this summer fruit has health benefits that make it a seasonal favorite.

On her Radio show, 103FM, Dr. Maya Rosman revealed which fruit can help reduce bloating in the body and support overall health. According to Rosman, this refreshing summer fruit is not only beneficial for digestion but also supports healthy skin and vision, contains fewer calories than most fruits, and helps maintain fluid balance. The fruit in question: watermelon.

Rosman emphasized that although watermelon does contain natural sugars, moderation is still important.

Five health benefits of watermelon

Low in calories
Compared to other fruits, watermelon is relatively low in calories. One serving equals about three cups of watermelon cubes, roughly 300 grams. Because of its low calorie density, you can enjoy a larger portion without significantly increasing calorie intake.

Better blood sugar balance when combined wisely
To slow the absorption of sugar from watermelon, Rosman recommends pairing it with a source of fat or protein. A popular and effective example is watermelon served with feta cheese.

More satisfying than sweet snacks
Watermelon contains dietary fiber and a high volume of water, which helps create a feeling of fullness. A serving of watermelon can be far more satisfying than a chocolate bar with the same number of calories.

Rich in lycopene
Watermelon is high in lycopene, a powerful antioxidant known for its role in protecting cells and helping reduce the risk of certain types of cancer.

Supports hydration and skin health
With its high water content, watermelon contributes to daily fluid intake and helps prevent dehydration. Adequate hydration is essential for maintaining fresh, healthy-looking skin.

A natural remedy for bloating

Rosman also highlighted a lesser-known benefit of watermelon: its natural diuretic effect.
“Watermelon helps the body eliminate excess fluids, which can reduce bloating,” she explained. “Maimonides already recommended watermelon in his time for digestion and fluid balance, and even today it’s considered one of the most effective foods for regulating fluids in the body.”
