Many of us tend to avoid certain foods, often for good reason, since they may contain high amounts of sugar or other processed ingredients. However, sometimes we get it wrong.
In an interview with Dr. Steven Dahmer, director of a medical center in Arizona, he highlights six such foods—including chocolate and eggs—that can actually be beneficial to your health. Here is the list:
1. Potatoes
A 100-gram serving of steamed potatoes contains only 100 calories and is free of fat, sodium, cholesterol, and gluten. It provides half the recommended daily intake of vitamin C, along with potassium, dietary fiber, antioxidants, and vitamin B6.
As for calories, if you avoid turning them into fries, their caloric value remains relatively low. What’s wrong with a little energy?
2. Eggs
Despite their high cholesterol content, eggs contain 13 essential vitamins and minerals and are an excellent source of muscle-building protein.
A single egg contains only 72 calories. A large egg has about 186 milligrams of cholesterol, so it is best not to consume more than one egg per day.
3. Butter
Even this often-criticized food has a positive side. “Butter and cheese are rich in probiotics, which support gut health and immune function,” the expert notes. He adds that cheese also contains vitamin B12 and phosphorus. Researchers suggest that high-quality cheese can reduce levels of bad cholesterol and lower the risk of stroke.
4. Milk
Milk provides the body with high-quality protein, calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin B12.
5. Chocolate
Chocolate with a high cocoa percentage is rich in polyphenols and antioxidants, which help reduce inflammation.
6. Coffee
According to the expert, when consumed in moderation—up to four cups per day—coffee can offer significant health benefits. It is packed with antioxidants and may reduce the risk of several diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, and diabetes.
