Antisemite Nick Fuentes Forced to Apologize After Assaulting Jewish Activist
Court ordered apology after far-right influencer pepper-sprayed Illinois activist Marla Rose during confrontation outside his home
Nick Fuentes (Screenshot/X)Nick Fuentes, the far-right influencer known for his antisemitic rhetoric, has been forced to issue a court-ordered apology after assaulting a Jewish activist outside his home in Berwyn, Illinois.
The apology followed a misdemeanor battery case stemming from a November 10, 2024 confrontation with Marla Rose, a 59-year-old progressive activist and freelance writer who approached Fuentes’ house after learning they lived in the same suburb of Chicago.
Rose had driven roughly 10 minutes to the property after Fuentes’ address circulated online following a controversial social media post. Standing outside the home, she began filming the exterior and decided to knock on the door.
“I don’t believe that people should hide behind screens,” Rose said.
Fuentes opened the door and confronted her. According to Rose and police reporting cited in the case, he pepper-sprayed her, shoved her off the porch and grabbed her phone before stomping on it, breaking the device.
The incident led to a misdemeanor battery charge in Cook County Circuit Court. Rather than proceed to trial, prosecutors negotiated a deferred prosecution agreement under which Fuentes agreed to complete 75 hours of community service, attend an anger-management class, compensate Rose for the destroyed phone and issue a formal apology.
Fuentes’ attorneys repeatedly requested delays in fulfilling the agreement, according to Rose. The case returned to court last month after she threatened to push for a trial if the requirements were not completed.
At the hearing, Fuentes appeared remotely via Zoom with his camera turned off. His attorney handed Rose a printed apology letter and quickly requested it back before it could circulate publicly.
“I was in shock,” Rose said. “That’s not what we had agreed upon between us.”
According to Rose’s recollection, the letter described Fuentes as having “overreacted” to her presence while repeatedly emphasizing that she was “uninvited.” The apology did not reference his history of antisemitic remarks.
“I’m still trying to find some sort of justice with that letter of apology,” she said.
Rose said her decision to confront Fuentes was influenced partly by her background. She grew up in a Jewish family whose roots trace back to Russia and Ukraine, though she now describes herself as agnostic and not deeply involved in religious life.
“My Jewish identity is also forged by social justice, of the history of speaking up for those who are oppressed,” she said. “I think that Jewish people have a long and beautiful history of social justice.”
In recent weeks, Fuentes has drawn attention for positions that some observers view as unexpected, including opposition to war with Iran and urging his followers to vote for Democrats over Republicans. His longstanding hostility toward Israel has also gained traction in recent years making his followers alongside debates on the political left about Israel and Zionism.
Rose said some acquaintances have asked whether Fuentes’ positions signal a genuine shift. “I get a lot of messages from people who are like, ‘Wow, is Nick Fuentes changing his ways?’” she said.
“It bothers me that people aren’t seeing the larger, broader context in which he’s making these new claims,” Rose added. “I think it’s 100% opportunistic. He’s trying to get more people to follow him.”
“There are people who conflate Israel and Jewish people and Judaism, and whatever your views are on Zionism, conflate all those things together,” she said. “And it’s the perfect opportunity for a bad actor like Fuentes to jump in there and stir up more antisemitism and just lean into the tropes that are so ancient.”
