Rabbeinu Bachya, at the end of the introduction to Shaar HaBitachon in Chovot HaLevavot, explains how trust in God can transform your life, making it calmer and more joyful. You are invited to discover the secret to a life free of worry and to experience ease in livelihood and lasting emotional peace. Join us on a journey toward a better life through trust in God.
1. A Person Who Trusts in God Is Not Disturbed by Missing Pleasures
Rabbeinu Bachya writes that one of the great benefits of trust is inner tranquility. A person who trusts in God experiences peace of heart, free from worldly worries, and is not shaken by the absence of physical desires. Such a person lives in calmness, security, and serenity.
As the verse states: “Blessed is the man who trusts in God, and God will be his security. He will be like a tree planted by water… he will not fear when heat comes, and in a year of drought he will not worry” (Yirmiyahu 17).
These verses illustrate the deep calm that characterizes someone who truly trusts in God.
2. Livelihood Comes to the One Who Trusts, Where He Is
Another benefit of trust is peace of mind from unnecessary wandering in search of livelihood. Endless travel can exhaust the body and shorten one’s life.
A story is told about a pious man who traveled far to earn a living. There, he met an idol worshipper who challenged him. When the pious man declared that he serves the all powerful Creator who provides sustenance, the idol worshipper responded: “Your actions contradict your words. If what you say is true, God could provide for you in your own city just as He does here. Why travel so far?”
The man had no answer. He returned home and resolved not to leave his city again for the sake of earning a livelihood.
3. A Person of Trust Chooses Work That Brings Peace
Trust in God also frees a person from exhausting and burdensome labor. Such a person does not chase difficult work or positions of power that demand constant strain or expose them to harm.
Instead, one who trusts in God chooses a livelihood that allows physical ease, a good reputation, mental clarity, and the ability to fulfill spiritual obligations. They understand that effort alone does not increase or decrease what they are meant to receive. Everything comes according to God’s decree.
As it says: “For neither from the east nor from the west… but God is the Judge; He lowers one and raises another” (Tehillim 75).
4. A Person of Trust Is Not Distressed by Financial Setbacks
A person who trusts in God does not become distressed if a business deal fails, merchandise does not sell, debts are not repaid, or illness prevents them from working.
They understand that God manages their life better than they ever could and chooses what is truly best for them.
As it says: “Only to God does my soul wait in silence, for from Him is my hope” (Tehillim 62).
5. A Person of Trust Finds Joy in Every Situation
Perhaps the most powerful benefit is inner joy. A person who trusts in God is able to feel happiness in every situation, even when things seem difficult or go against their natural expectations.
This is because they believe that everything God does is ultimately for their good. Just as a loving mother cares for her child, even when the child resists, so too God cares for us with compassion and wisdom.
As King David says: “Like a weaned child with his mother… so is my soul within me” (Tehillim 131).
A Life Transformed by Trust
One who trusts in God gains five major benefits that dramatically improve life:
Peace of mind free from worry and physical cravings
Livelihood provided without exhausting struggle
The ability to choose work that supports both body and soul
Emotional calm even during financial or personal difficulties
Deep inner joy rooted in trust that everything is for the good
Trust in God is the key to a life of calm, happiness, and true inner security.
