Nearly three years after his passing, stories about Rabbi Gershon Edelstein of blessed memory continue to inspire. Known for his dedication to Torah and humility, he was equally careful in matters that many people overlook, especially when it came to the property of others.

This touching account, reported by B’Chadrei Charedim, reveals the depth of his integrity even in his final moments.

A Lifelong Commitment

For more than seventy years, Rabbi Edelstein served as the ba’al tekiah at Ponovezh Yeshiva, sounding the shofar each year with devotion.

Even in the final year of his life, despite his age and frailty, he continued this role as part of his lifelong commitment.

In his last days, he expressed a wish to use a specific shofar that belonged to Rabbi Tzvi Greineman, a respected expert in the laws of shofars and a nephew of the Chazon Ish.

Two shofars from Rabbi Greineman were brought to Rabbi Edelstein’s home for this purpose.

His Final Request

On the morning of his passing, less than two hours after he left this world, his family took immediate action.

They contacted Rabbi Tzvi Greineman to confirm his location and informed him that the shofars he had lent years earlier were being returned right away.

This was not simply a thoughtful gesture. It was a direct fulfillment of Rabbi Edelstein’s instructions.

In his will, he had clearly requested that any borrowed items or outstanding obligations be returned to their rightful owners before his burial.

A Powerful Message

This story reflects a powerful lesson.

Even at the very end of his life, Rabbi Edelstein remained mindful of responsibility, honesty, and respect for others. What may seem like a small detail, returning borrowed items, was for him a matter of deep importance.

A Lasting Example

Nearly three years later, this moment continues to resonate.

Rabbi Gershon Edelstein’s legacy is not only found in his teachings, but in the way he lived every detail of his life with care and integrity.
