There’s rice, and then there’s Indian rice.

In many kitchens, rice is simply a side dish. In Indian cooking, it often becomes the centerpiece of the meal, rich with color, aroma, and layers of flavor.

The secret is not only in the spices themselves, but in the cooking method. Indian rice dishes are built carefully, with spices toasted in oil before the rice is added, allowing every grain to absorb deep flavor and fragrance.

One of the most popular choices is long grain basmati rice, known for its light texture and delicate aroma. Combined with classic Indian spices like cumin, turmeric, cinnamon, cardamom, curry, and garam masala, the result is a dish that feels comforting, warm, and full of character.

Popular Indian Rice Dishes

Indian cuisine includes many different rice dishes, each with its own style and flavor profile.

Today, we’re focusing on an easy and flavorful version inspired by garam masala rice.

Garam Masala Rice

Ingredients

  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • 1 carrot, grated
  • 1/2 cup frozen peas, thawed
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • Salt, to taste
  • Handful of chopped cilantro

Instructions

Rinse the rice well and soak it in water for about 15 minutes.

Heat the oil in a medium pot over medium heat and sauté the onion until golden.

Add the garlic, turmeric, cumin, cinnamon, and garam masala. Stir for about 1 minute until fragrant.

Add the grated carrot and peas and mix well.

Drain the rice and add it to the pot, stirring gently so the grains absorb the spices and oil.

Pour in the boiling water and season with salt.

Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 15 minutes, or until the water is absorbed.

Turn off the heat and let the rice rest, covered, for several minutes.

Fluff gently with a fork, sprinkle with chopped cilantro, and serve warm.

Easy Ways to Upgrade the Dish

For extra flavor and texture, you can also add:

  • raisins for a touch of sweetness
  • toasted almonds or cashews
  • cooked chickpeas
  • tofu cubes
  • chopped hot chili pepper for extra heat

Simple, fragrant, and full of warming spices, this Indian inspired rice dish is an easy way to bring bold flavor to everyday meals.
