Some days are busy from beginning to end, but you still want dinner to feel comforting, rich, and homemade.

This braised beef recipe delivers exactly that with surprisingly little effort. The meat turns tender and flavorful, the sauce becomes deep and savory, and the entire house fills with the kind of aroma that makes everyone wander into the kitchen asking when dinner will be ready.

It’s elegant enough for Shabbat and simple enough for a cozy family dinner during the week.

Show Stopping Braised Beef

Ingredients

  • 2.2 lb beef shoulder roast, cut no. 4 or 5
  • 3 tbsp oil
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 4 garlic cloves, sliced
  • 2 carrots, sliced
  • 1 tbsp sweet paprika
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp honey or silan
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1 cup boiling water

Instructions

Heat the oil in a wide sauté pan or heavy pot over medium high heat.

Sear the beef on all sides until deeply browned.

Add the onion, garlic, and carrots and sauté for about 1 minute.

Season with the paprika, salt, and black pepper.

Add the honey or silan and pour in the soy sauce.

Add the boiling water and stir gently.

Cook uncovered over medium high heat for about 10 minutes, until the sauce begins to slightly thicken.

Reduce the heat to low, partially cover the pot, and continue cooking for 50 to 60 minutes, turning the meat occasionally so it stays coated in the sauce.

For extra sauce, you can increase the water to 2 cups.

Once the meat is tender, slice it and spoon the sauce generously over the top before serving.

Easy Ways to Deepen the Flavor

For even richer flavor, try adding:

  • 1 tsp mustard
  • fresh thyme leaves

If the sauce feels too thin at the end of cooking, simmer uncovered for a few additional minutes until it thickens slightly.

Cozy, Rich, and Full of Flavor

This braised beef is tender, savory, and deeply comforting, the kind of dish that tastes like it took hours of effort even though the preparation is wonderfully simple.
