(Photo: Shamrit)Ingredients (Makes About 30 Churros)
1 cup milk (250 ml)
½ package butter (100 g / 7 tbsp)
¼ cup sugar (50 g)
½ teaspoon salt (5 g)
About 1⅓ cups all-purpose flour (200 g)
4 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon rum
1 liter canola oil, for deep frying
Powdered sugar, toffee sauce, or melted chocolate for serving
Toffee Sauce
Ingredients
1 cup sugar (200 g)
1 container heavy cream (about 250 ml / 1 cup)
Instructions
In a saucepan, cook the sugar over medium heat until it turns into a golden caramel.
Carefully add the heavy cream.
Continue cooking while stirring constantly until you have a smooth, thick, light-brown toffee sauce.
Instructions
Place the milk, butter, and sugar in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil.
Remove from the heat and immediately add the flour and salt.
Stir vigorously with a wooden spoon until a thick dough forms.
Return the saucepan to low heat and cook the dough for about 5 minutes, stirring constantly to dry it out slightly.
Transfer the dough to the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment and let it cool for 2 minutes.
Add the eggs gradually, one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
Add the vanilla extract and rum, and continue mixing until the dough is smooth and slightly sticky.
Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip.
Pipe short strips of dough directly into hot oil and fry for about 1½ minutes, or until golden brown.
Remove and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
Dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with warm toffee sauce or melted chocolate before serving.
Enjoy these crispy, golden churros with your favorite sweet topping!
