As children, many of us loved spending time in the kitchen and making things on our own. Parents who encouraged that independence often raised children who could prepare simple meals for themselves at a young age.
Now that we're parents ourselves, we experience the same. There are days when children want to make something on their own and feel like the chefs of the house. As mothers, we may hesitate to allow it because somehow it always seems to end with flour on the floor, chocolate on the cabinet handles, bowls stuck to the countertop, and countless other surprises we'd rather avoid.
Still, it’s important to encourage children of all ages to participate in food preparation, even toddlers and babies, because it contributes significantly to their development. One of the best solutions is to offer them a simple recipe that requires minimal ingredients and little mess — like these easy no-bake cookies.
They are soft, naturally sweet, and easy for toddlers to eat. If you have a baby who has started eating solid foods, you can easily adapt the recipe by avoiding honey and other ingredients that may not be suitable. These cookies are incredibly tasty and soft, and one of their biggest advantages is that they require no oven and no special shopping trip. Most families already have the ingredients at home.
Ingredients
1 very ripe banana, mashed
1 cup quick oats
1½ tablespoons raw tahini
¼ teaspoon cinnamon and/or 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
2–3 tablespoons shredded coconut
Instructions
Mash the banana in a bowl until smooth.
Add the tahini and mix well.
Stir in the oats, cinnamon, and cocoa powder.
If the mixture is too soft, add a little more oats. If it seems too dry, add a teaspoon of water.
Shape the mixture into small balls and flatten them into cookies that are easy for little hands to hold.
Place the cookies in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes to firm up.
Serve and enjoy.
These wholesome cookies make a fun kitchen activity for children and a healthy snack for the whole family.
