A 21 year old woman remains in critical condition, while the seven other victims are listed in stable condition. However, no suspects have been arrested so far.
New York City police were called to West 31st Street shortly after 10:37 p.m. following reports of gunfire in the area. When officers arrived, they found eight people suffering from gunshot wounds of varying severity.
According to police, the shooting began near the boardwalk, where large crowds had gathered for the holiday celebrations. As a result, the incident prompted a major NYPD response as officers searched the area for the suspect or suspects involved.
The victims include a 37 year old man, a 33 year old man, a 25 year old woman, and a 21 year old woman. In addition, four children were wounded, including boys aged 14, 12, 7, and 6.
All eight victims were transported by emergency medical services to local hospitals for treatment. Authorities, however, have not released their names.
Police recovered a firearm at the scene, but no arrests have been made. Moreover, investigators are still working to determine the motive and circumstances behind the shooting. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that more than one person was involved.
The shooting took place in the 2900 block of West 31st Street as families and children filled the area to mark the national holiday. Therefore, the gunfire caused panic among those gathered and led to a large police presence in the neighborhood.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in New York, the holiday was also disrupted by a brief fire on the Brooklyn Bridge, reportedly sparked by fireworks. Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control, and it was extinguished within a short time.
Earlier Saturday, President Donald Trump delivered a speech at a central event marking the national anniversary. During his remarks, Trump referred to recent U.S. military actions, including claims about operations involving Venezuela and Iran and the sinking of Iranian naval vessels.
The investigation into the Coney Island shooting remains ongoing. Therefore, police are asking anyone with information or footage from the area to contact authorities.
