Yeshiva Student Threatened With a Knife—But Refused to Stop Reaching Fellow Jews

Tense moments unfolded last Friday afternoon in the quiet Bentley neighborhood of Melbourne, Australia. Yitzchak Levilenthal, an approximately 18-year-old yeshiva student from the local Chabad community, had set out—as he does each week—on his regular outreach mission ahead of Queen Shabbat. Along his usual route through businesses and private homes near Centre Road, Levilenthal offered passersby the opportunity to put on tefillin and distributed Shabbat candles and fresh challah.

As he walked along a quiet residential street, the young man politely approached an older man passing by and asked whether he was Jewish and interested in doing a mitzvah. The man responded aggressively and extremely: He began hurling harsh insults and shouting, demanding that he stop speaking to him. The student remained completely composed, wished him a good day, and continued on his way. But the attacker decided to follow him, made a U-turn, and ran back toward him with the intention of attacking him.

At that point, the incident escalated into a genuine threat to life. The attacker pulled out a knife from his side, pointed it at the yeshiva student, and explicitly threatened to murder him and his rabbis. Levilenthal responded with striking calm, raising his hands and stepping back in an effort to de-escalate the situation. But when he realized that the attacker was continuing to advance toward him, he was forced to stand his ground face-to-face with the enraged assailant, who approached and delivered a powerful punch directly to his stomach.

Passersby who witnessed what was happening urgently called emergency services. Victoria Police detectives quickly arrived at the scene, located the suspect, detained him, and took an initial statement from him, while the investigation continues.

But the truly remarkable part of the episode came immediately after the chaos had ended. As soon as Levilenthal finished giving his statement to police at the scene, he picked up his tefillin bag and continued with self-sacrifice to complete his distribution route—helping more Jews put on tefillin and bring the light of Shabbat into their homes.
