"There is a unique advantage to attaining atonement through overlooking the faults of others. When a person is willing to forgo his own grievances, Divine justice responds measure for measure by overlooking his sins. In this way, his forgiveness is not an undeserved gift, because it is his own actions that brought about God's forgiveness."

What Should We Focus on During the Ten Days of Repentance?
During the Ten Days of Repentance, a person should carefully examine his deeds, repent for his wrongdoing, and increase his Torah study, acts of charity, and good deeds. It is especially appropriate to strengthen oneself in areas that one may not observe as carefully throughout the rest of the year.
During these days, the scales of judgment are before God. Those whose merits prevail are sealed for life, while those who do not merit are sealed otherwise. Although repentance and heartfelt prayer are always valuable, during these days they are especially powerful and are accepted immediately.
Repentance should not be limited to sins involving actions, such as Shabbat desecration, theft, or forbidden relationships. One must also repent for negative character traits, including pride, jealousy, the pursuit of wealth, and the pursuit of honor.
What Is Special About the Week Between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur?
The seven days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur correspond to the seven days of the week throughout the previous year.
Fortunate is the person who dedicates each day of this week to repentance and Torah study according to his ability. By doing so, he atones for the shortcomings associated with that particular day of the week over the past year.
For example, on Sunday he should focus on correcting his spiritual failings from all the Sundays of the previous year. Likewise, on Shabbat Shuvah, he should especially seek to repair any shortcomings related to the observance of Shabbat throughout the year.
In addition, one should be especially careful to observe every aspect of Shabbat on Shabbat Shuvah, and accept upon oneself to be meticulous in the observance of the laws of Shabbat throughout the coming year.
